1. BASIC USE OF PLANTING HEDGE:

  • To separate several different "zones" in the landscaping (ex., resting zone from household zone, roads,...);
  • To cover unattractive views;
  • For wind protection;
  • In cemeteries.

2. TYPES OF HEDGES:

  • Formal – needs more attention and work. Can control hedge height and width depending on species.
  • Informal – need for more space depends on species, heavily flowering plants are very suitable for country estates.
  • Evergreen conifer hedges – keeps their green color all year-round.
  • Deciduous hedges – sortiment provides wider choice, multifarious because of flower, fruit, foliage and shape varieties; brilliant Autumn foliage.

3. PREPARING THE SOIL:

It’s recommended to plant hedge in trenches (at least 0.6 m deep and 0.5-0.7 wide, depending on hedge height). Fill the trench with fertile soil, compost and turf mix, add fertilizer. Add well rotted farm manure in the bottom of the trench for even better results. !!! Preparing the soil is the most-important work for beautiful hedge to grow. It’s possible to get result within 4-5 years if the soil is prepared correctly and hedge is carefully tended (pruned, fertilized).

4. PLANTING DISTANCE:

Size / Type

Formal hedges:

Informal hedges:

Small

till 30 cm

40-60 cm

Medium-sized

40-50 cm

0.6-1 m (distance depends on species)

Tall/Large

60-70 cm

1-1.5 (2) m

5. PRUNING AND FERTILIZING:

!!! Careful and correct annual pruning and fertilizing is very important (especially for formal hedges) to acquire beautiful hedge.

  • Renewal pruning for informal hedge – remove branches that are dead, damaged or diseased.
  • Flowering hedge needs pruning after flowering to promote even more flowers in the next year.
  • Evergreen hedges are recommended to prune in May and June.
  • Deciduous hedges are recommended to prune 2-3 times a year – early in Spring and in the end of July or beginning of August.
  • Fertilize from the end of April till July. How to use - depends on type of fertilizer.
    Never fertilize dry plants - water well first and feed 1/2 hour later to avoid "burning" roots.
