Blue Spruce - Picea pungens f glauca

Picea pungens f. glauca – silver spruce or commonly known as blue spruce is the phrase that comes into mind when we hear words “The Christmas Tree”. Already this year you can give the childhood memories of small fir-trees “like ballet-dancers” in the story books by M.Stāraste and the gorgeous silver spruce that grows next to the school or kindergarten both to your family and the school your children attend.

Blue spruce or silver spruce is very quick growing and can reach 15 m in height. Its width can reach 4-5 meters and its cone-like silver blue or bluish green shape has rich branches that go to the very ground. Even in the autumn or winter’s night the silver needles will glitter as if covered with hoarfrost and will bring light in the dark yard. The warm autumn is very friendly for making an accent in your garden before the holidays come.

Outstanding solution for big garden where it is used as slender, thick stand-alone, effective background for bright and colorful flowers, heather, low fir-trees and low shrubs. You can also use it in larger landscapes where the blue spruces are combined with contrasting deciduous tree groups.

Even if you own only an average size garden and are creative and decisive, blue spruce can for many years fit in an average garden – it can be successfully shaped by trimming the side branches and making tight and dense cone-like form. By pollarding the top of a well grown tree you can create a big round or pillow-shape form which suits well in average size fir-tree and deciduous tree group. It is winter-hardy and does not suffer the sun burn. Good for planting in a fertile and moisture maintaining soil with acidic (pH 5.5) reaction.

The visit of a small size blue spruce in your home can start briefly before the Christmas where it – put in your living room – can give you joy also on the New Year’s Eve and in the few following days. For this purpose you can easily use spruces that are planted in containers. Under the container you will find a plate that is meant to collect the water from watering. The root ball of larger trees is packed in a wattle-work of cloth and wire and can be wrapped in strong polythene. Once in a while you need to wet it by watering. If the outside temperature is around zero degrees, you can put the tree outside your house right after the holidays, but in case of fierce cold you should keep it in a cool, light room. When the cold is gone and the soil thawed, you can plant the tree in your garden. If the soil is not frozen, you can plant your blue spruce after the holidays.

Christmas tree in a pot - 'Conica'

Celebrating Christmas and waiting for the New Year, invite in your house or work place a green friend from the greenery “Baltezers” – Canadian fir-tree “Conica”. Spend the Christmas night sitting by a green, sweet-smelling fir-tree singing “…thy leaves are never changing…” with a thought that as soon as the winter is gone you will be able to plant this tree in your garden ensuring that it will bring joy for you and your friends for many years. Fir-tree we offer is 80cm high – it will fit well in a small downtown apartment or office, school or kindergarten. In a large presentation room you can put it on a low table or platform.

Thick green branching is made for miniature lights, shinny bulbs or cones, but those who like simple elegancy will enjoy the almost perfect cone-like shape of the tree which even without extra decorations will fit in both ascetic and splendid interior.

For solid fixation we provide 12 L container in which the tree is planted. You need to put a flat plate under it because once in a while the tree needs to be watered.

The joy for the green guest can continue also after the holidays if you plan the tree to be planted in your garden. If the temperature is around zero degrees you can place the tree outside your house somewhere where it is safe from direct sun. But in case of strong cold – in a cool, light room, occasionally watering it. When the cold is over and the soil is thawed you can plant the fir-tree in your garden.

Canadian fir-tree “Conica” is slow growing – its yearly growth is small, needles are deep green, short, but twice in a season (in spring and the end of summer) they literally shine with their new light green needles coming out.

”Conica” is fit both for small garden when it’s planted together with low fir-trees of deciduous trees  and grouping it together with other fir-trees in a larger garden. In twenty year time it can reach up to 2-3 meters in height not losing its cone-like shape.

Christmas tree in a pot - 'Ohlendorffii'

Celebrating the Christmas and waiting for the New Year you can decorate a room and in a special place put a little Christmas tree. We offer a sort of common fir-tree  “Ohlendorfii”. Since it is related to the fir-trees growing in Latvian forests, “Ohlendorfii” fir-tree has similar deep green color but thick branching with several closely placed tops. Over the years the half a meter high roundish fir-tree grows into a broad, cone-like impenetrable Christmas tree. Short, strong and flexible branches are fit for dense decorations and electrical lights.

We offer different size fir-trees. They will fit well in a small downtown apartment or office, school or kindergarten. In a large presentation room you can put it on a low table or platform. For safe fixation use the container in which the tree is planted. You need to put a flat plate under it because once in a while the tree needs to be watered.

The joy for the green guest can continue also after the holidays if you plan the tree to be planted in your garden. If the temperature is around zero degrees you can place the tree outside your house somewhere where it is safe from direct sun. But in the case of strong cold place it in a cool, light room, occasionally watering it. When the cold is over and the soil is thawed you can plant the fir-tree in your garden.

The common fir-tree “Ohlendorfii” is comparatively slow growing and in good growth conditions within a year the height can increase by 20cm. It is well fit for small garden where ten meter high blue spruce has no place. We could say that this tree is a good compromise between various sorts of 10-20 meters tall fir-trees and the barely visible low fir-trees. You can combine it with deciduous trees to make the landscape more attractive. The tree is completely winter-hardy and at the beginning of the winter and early spring does not suffer from direct sun light (sun burns).

Serbian spruce – Picea omorika

Christmas is coming and maybe you would like to invite a new spruce in your garden or country house? A fast growing tree with a peculiar nature and slender stature? If so, the Serbian spruce will be the right choice – you can plant it before the holidays.

Serbian spruce can pride itself on having a slender but explicitly compact crown with a pointed top. The slender and narrow crown is made especially harmonious by the gracefully dropping branches that are little bit bent upwardly and needles that look like thick flounced lace sleeves. If the base color of the Serbian spruce is green, then the needles at the end of the branches glitter as if they are covered with frost or barely visible light first snow. The effect of the silver-white facture of the branches is caused by the two-colored needles where the top is dark green but the bottom – little white lines that are tightly lying next to each other. Comparatively early – already reaching the height of 2.5-3 m – the branches of the Serbian spruce are adorned by small 4-6 cm big cinnamon-brown cones.

Because of its beautiful branches the spruce is good for planting as a solitaire in lawn of large gardens around private houses. When full grown it can reach up to 18 m in height but the diameter won’t exceed 3-4 meters. It is fit for planting in groups besides public buildings, schools, kindergartens; can be combined with other big size conifer trees. It fits in well together with fast growing deciduous trees where the greenish white color of the spruce will bring balance among the red, yellow, and white-spotted diversity. Because of its quick-growing it is easy to form and excellent for hedgerows (cutting it in June). You can plant it also as a protector from wind.

We’ll be waiting for you in the greenery Baltezers – To choose Your right Christmas Tree!
